Series Description
In a world where politics, culture and social media algorithms can shape our opinions more than we’d like, it is more important than ever to deepen our understanding of the Bible so our beliefs, opinions and values are on solid ground. As we seek to more clearly understand various translations of our English-language Bibles, it is important to remember that the Bible was not written in the 20th century in the English language we use today. The scriptures studied by Jesus and the apostles were the Hebrew scriptures in what we call the Old Testament. The words they studied, memorized, and sang had meanings that are often difficult to translate into equivalent English words—especially when so many of our words can mean different things to different people.
This 3-part study series brings new insights into two of the most important words throughout the entire Bible: justice and righteousness. Rather than just try to pin down a simplistic definition of the two words most commonly translated as justice (mišpāṭ) and righteousness (ṣəḏāqâ), this study explores these two Hebrew words and several related words to bring a much deeper understanding of these concepts and how they flow into New Testament, where the study shares some of the relevant Greek.
