Mission
When we talk about the “mission” of the church, we are asking the important question of purpose. Why are we here? What are we seeking to accomplish? Our understanding of our mission as a church grows directly out of our understanding of the gospel message of the kingdom of God which Jesus proclaimed.
Two Cities Church is a community of Jesus’ disciples, called by God to model the blessings of his kingdom through our life together, and to spread the blessings of his kingdom to others through our life in the world.
According to this mission statement the church has two basic purposes:
First, the church is called to model what the kingdom of God is like before the watching world. It is the place where you can actually see and experience what worship, family dynamics, business practices, race relations, artistic endeavors, and all the rest of life is like when God is king. It is the place where you can begin to enjoy the blessings of God’s kingdom now, and get a glimpse of how things will be in the future when everyone acknowledges God as their king once again.
Second, the church is called to be the agent by which God is actually spreading his kingdom throughout the world. In fulfilling this task, the church does not rely upon deception or coercion, or the use of any worldly power—political, financial or otherwise. Instead we openly tell others the truth about Jesus in our words, and we show others the love of Jesus in our deeds. As we bear witness to God in this way, he is pleased by the power of his Spirit to call others into his kingdom through faith in Jesus Christ. As people everywhere are brought back into a right relationship with God as their king, he brings healing and renewal to families, institutions, communities, and even nations.
